Josh was raised on the Scottish island of Bute before joining the UK armed forces at the tender age of sixteen in a quest for travel & adventure., seeing service in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. After eleven years “globetrotting” he left the military for a career in television news, taking him to some of the world’s most dangerous places, beaming back the news live via satellite and winning various awards in the process with Sky News (Afghanistan, Iraq & Kosovo) and Aljazeera English.

His photography journey began in 2017 after redundancy from the Aljazeera English Channel in Qatar, where he covered events as varied as the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Syria; the Maidan Revolution in Kyiv and the onset of war in Donbas, the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, US Presidential elections in Washington DC and the funeral of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

His photography has been featured by the Sony Alpha Universe and he’s often found in the Arctic Circle capturing the magic of the north when not begging for a photo pass to shoot images of his favourite bands in concert.

“I lost my job and marriage battling PTSD not long after returning from covering the battle for Mosul in late 2016. It wasn’t my first brush with PTSD after a US Abrams tank hit our hotel in Baghdad, killing two cameramen, including my friend and colleague, Reuters cameraman Taras Protsyuk during the US led invasion in April 2003.”

I returned to Scotland in the summer of 2017,, unemployed and lost in the dark abyss of PTSD and depression. After a few months of being in a total zombie-like state I bought my first mirrorless Sony camera and headed north to Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Finland to chase the Northern Lights in an attempt to exorcise my demons and find a sense of peace and purpose to my life again.

The images on this website are the results of my journey to recovery“
